She is the torchbearer of the night, goddess of witchcraft, liminal spaces, the underworld, the moon, ghosts, arcane knowledge, and crossroads. Her dominion over magic and sorcery, coupled with her role as a protector of boundaries, and crossroads, paints a picture of a deity who straddles both the ethereal and earthly realms.
Hecate played an integral role in the story of Persephone using her flaming torches to guide Persephone through the inky darkness of Hades to return to the land of the living. After it was decided Persephone would spend half the year on Earth and half in Hades, Hecate became Persephone's trusted companion in the Underworld.
