The Hesperides were the nymphs of the evening and golden light, who were associated with the western edge of the world and the setting sun. These nymphs were tasked with guarding the mythical Garden of the Hesperides, where they tended to a tree bearing golden apples given to Hera on her wedding day by the primordial goddess Gaia. There were originally only three Hesperides but the number later expanded to four or seven, with each poet giving them slightly different names. Hesiod, for example, names the four "clear voices Hesperides" as Aigle (or Aegle, meaning "dazzling light"), Erytheia (or Erytheis), Hesperia ("sunset glow"), and Arethusa.

The Garden of the Hesperides was considered a sacred and magical place, often depicted as a lush and exotic orchard. In various myths, the hero Heracles (Hercules) was assigned the labor of retrieving the golden apples as one of his Twelve Labors while a golden apple stolen by Eris eventually (through a dramatic beauty contest that would make Sandra Bullock blush) led to the start of the Trojan War. The Hesperides were often depicted as daughters of either the Titan Atlas or the god Hesperus, who personified the evening star.
